ABOUT Tokara Boerboels

Tokara Boerboels is based on a  smallholding, just north of Pretoria, South-Africa and is very much a family orientated business owned by myself Andre Basson , my wife Arlene and our beautiful daughter Nicole, who from age 3, became actively involved with our dogs .

My first experience with dog breeding was as a young boy when my dad use to breed with St Bernard’s on a small scale. I fell in love with the Boerboel breed when I attended the Pretoria show whilst being in the South-African Defence Force. I clearly remember a breeder showing these beautiful dogs which, despite their gigantic size, had a lovely temperament and especially loved the attention from a group of school children. Since this encounter with the breed it has been a dream to own a Boerboel once I have settled and had a place suitable for a Boerboel.

In 2008 my family and I moved from a townhouse in a security complex to a house in a suburb. Security became a concern and I arranged a visit to a local Boerboel breeder. On that day we arrived just as they were busy with a photoshoot of the breeder’s best males. We were told that our daughter, then one and a half years old, could stand and watch with us, as these dogs were child friendly and would not bite. That visit turned my wife into the ultimate Boerboel lover. That specific day my dream of becoming just a Boerboel owner grew to that of becoming a Boerboel breeder.

We bought our first male, Bismark in that same year and soon after a female Nina (our Logo). We became passionate about Boerboels and started attending Boerboel shows and appraisals, visited different breeders and their websites. I was especially impressed with the dogs of Mr Lukas van Vuuren from Spitsvuur and we became regular visitors with him and “tannie” Estna on their Free State farm.

Today we are thankful for their friendship and for sharing their knowledge and helping us in establishing our own Boerboel stud. We are blessed and thankful for having had the opportunity to acquire top quality breeding dogs, some of which rates among the best in the world, from Mr van Vuuren. These dogs formed the fundamental basis of the Tokara Boerboels from where we can continue to breed top quality Boerboels.
